The History of the Vikings
The main object of this exploration as I said was mainly silver which was flowing at this time northward from the Islamic Empire in the Middle East to the Byzantine Empire and from there into Eastern Europe. One of these new towns that sprung up was Kiev or Kiev on the Dnieper River in what's now Ukraine by the mid 800s. It served as a focal point of trade and diplomacy around which eventually a kingdom emerged called the Kiev in Rus. Later others similarly sprang up further east around what was later known as Novgorod and finally Moscow in present day Russia.
