The Victorians read sermons avidly. T.H. Huxley, who coined the word agnostic, wanted to put together some essays that he'd written on geology and other things. He titled them lay sermons because he thought that was a really exciting title That would bring in lots of readers. Can you imagine a world today where publishers have been the word sermon in the title to make sure people buy it?
