It took a lot of inspiration from the cinema world to stuff by like how Ashby like Harold and Maude where they use cat Stevens. It's also been noted in a lot of music centric think pieces on freaks and geeks to it. 1980 is a weird time in music. Music basically splintered into sub genres, disco, punk, new wave and heavy metal. They were all fit. So it gives it a lot of unique styles. The theme, of course, is Joan Jett's bad reputation. But you know, they almost went with Ted Nugent's great white buffalo. Because Paul Feig liked the opening guitar riff.
