Marius was assigned female after his death. Madre Wanna De La Cruz believed that the Virgin Mary had changed her gender in the womb from male to female because she had physical characteristics that we associate with men. There's a really good book that I can recommend if I can find it here. It's called trans and genderqueer subjects in medieval hagiography.
