How Much Credence Do You Put on Reading When Learning a Language?

For the six months in Japan, I was pretty focused on reading. It took me a whole month of reading it like four hours a day to get to the end of it. And then but I would just do that for hours. Like I would do it in class because I didn't understand anything the teacher was saying. So interesting. How much credence do you put on reading when learning a language? There's a really, really efficient way to grow your vocabulary and your like comprehension of grammar. But I also think in hindsight that doing a lot of reading early on actually damaged my pronunciation. You think not if you want to have a good accent, at least not early on.
