Modern portfolio theory has kind of been brainwashed to go towards where they don't really consider or appreciate tail risk which is the risk that prevents you from keeping your capital permanently. You paint a picture that perhaps that many of these well-intentioned folks out there look at risk in a much different way than standard deviation measure and use the phrase brainwashing talk about persuading someone to come over to your perspective on risk.
