The Importance of Expression in the First Amendment
The first amendment was not an important protection up until the early 20th century. The court just sort of ignored it and state governments, the federal government, they like engaged in censorship all the time. In the early 1900s, the first amendment took on this new life and became one of the most important aspects of the constitution. But that's really kind of emerged over the last 100 years or so.
