Metacognition was not included in the National Reading Panel report, and it's not one of the five pillars of No Child Left Behind. It is frequently left out of reading curricula. If you have a student who gives every indication of not being metacognitive, meaning you could ask them, how's your reading going? And then you ask them a question and they don't know any answers. We start with really simple questions like, does that make sense at the end of a sentence? Do I understand? Can I fix the problem? Can I get back on track?
