Is There a Substitute for Travel?

In terms of education, is there a substitute for actually just traveling and going to different places? Is that what you're meaning by education? How much can you actually get from, for example, reading Wikipedia or talking to people within your own community? Well, when I'm talking about the moral side of things, I tie it into culture and travel just because that's kind of the theme of my website.
