Hayek and the Conservatives

The term liberal has a different resonance on the two sides of the Atlantic. In the United States, from the European point of view, liberalism really means something closer to socialism. So why do people see him so often as a Conservative? I think that's complicated because Hayek himself recognized the difficulty of the term.
