The People of Dong Hulin

People at Shangshan ate a lot of nuts, ground up their acorns on heavy stone slabs. They also ate tubers like yams and may be rice. Excavations uncovered quite a bit of rice, including a single grain in the very oldest layer at the site. But there's no way of telling precisely when people along the middle and lower Yangtze went collecting wild rice or cultivating it intentionally.
