Rationing during World War II and then stopping rationing once you didn't have to anymore. We no longer have to have blackout curtains and a guy comes around that night to make sure that there's no crack of light showing. It would be very hard to say definitively how effective it was because it would have been very unethical to have a control group. They did do some really sneaky, sneaky and clever things, like even building decoy cities and decoying.
