In 1867, an expedition of 13,000 British soldiers. launched with the stated aim of freeing British hostages that were currently in MacDala. During the invasion, the emperor ended his own life rather than being taken a prisoner. Many of the pillaged objects were subsequently reassembled and auctioned off. The British Museum has agreed to loan back these objects to Ethiopia. However, Ethiopia has refused the loan and they would acknowledge England's ownership of the items.
