Act is an approach to therapy that combines acceptance strategies and a kind of mindfulness based approach to life alongside more traditional behavior change oriented strategies. One of the goals of act is to promote psychological flexibility, or as Steve put it, embracing our vulnerability and turning toward what hurts. The idea is that we can't deny the truth of our world for long and remain psychologically healthy. It's only by first accepting the truth ofOur experience, whether that be the truth ofour personal history, the truth of what's happening to us right now, that we can actually enact change in our world. We accept what is, and then we commit to the change that we're going to seek to create.
