A Brief History of Mali
The wealth of mali had turned it into a powerful military machine. Cowry shells, the shells of a type of sea snail that occurs most commonly in the indian ocean, served much the same purpose as gold. The classical chinese simbol for money even derives from a stylized drawing of one of these shells.
