The Transformation of Northern Gaul
The Roman state had effectively ceased to exist throughout northern Gaul by the time Clodio was born. Like Britain, northern Gaul had been a military province heavily dependent on direct state expenditures. The enormous invasion of Vandals, Suaves, and Allens in 405 and 406 is what drew Constantine III from Britain into Gaul. While he succeeded in restoring order to the region, northern Gaul was essentially forgotten when Constantine was caught and executed.
