If your friend has post-traumatic stress and it sounds like what you might be worried about is the dissociative aspect of it so if they're going into a flashback when you're out and about then the best thing to do is to bring their attention back immediately. The fastest way to do that is with a strong smell like peppermint or lavender or with a toxically sour sweet and you just pop it in their mouth. If they live in England they should be able to get an assessment within two weeks and get an evidence-based treatment forPost Traumatic Stress Disorder.
