In the sixties, when they hit, all our granaries were wooden. The provincial government estimated that the rats would cause about 25 million dollars in damage annually. In 19 53, the department of agriculture took over the exterminating from a private company and started administering a new poison called wharfrn. Warfern was much, much better at killing rats than any previous rodenticide. It wasn't that effective. Arsenic has a taste and a color tha rats learn to avoid. And it cost a lot of money.
