Some of these guys are hardcore racists, misogynists, and they think it's a triumph of their will to sort of not hide it. I would also criticize the people that you're describing, trying to be performative, performatively manly for actually not being manly at all. There is an attempt to take a kind of shortcut to actual manliness by just demonstrating a hideous caricature of it. They have many of them have no interest in actually doing things IRL that's in real life. And yeah, that doesn't really fully answer where it comes from exactly.
