The Evolution of Single-Cell Organisms

The first time for example that we know a single-celled organism exists was three and a half billion years ago. Most suggest it's a bacteria or an archaea which is quite similar to a bacteria. All living creatures are thought to be linked or derived from this one single-CElled organism so how do we know all this i mean they can't be some sort of fossil preserved from all those billions of years ago right well it would be absolutely tiny and very hard to find.
