The Psychological Effects of Criticism

People with high levels of self-compassion often view criticism as an opportunity for growth and learning. Research published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology found that people who were more self-critical were more likely to experience symptoms of depression and anxiety. So even our own criticism towards our self can make a difference. This shows how internal criticism, often triggered by external criticism, can negatively impact our mental health.
