waverley was the first ever historical novel, and it really brought scotland to the attention of england. Many scots from the eighteenth century tended to dissociate themselves from scotland,. which they saw as embarrassingly primitive and backwards. The character of waverley is replaced by a woman, a woman named clare randall in outlander.
