What Powers Did Americans Think That the British Government Should Have?
The question of power, which I've written about at length, obsessed them. They wrote more about power and its evils than any other single topic. Power was a malevolent force, which they could discuss in the abstract and in the concrete. It's a key idea that dominated their thought. And it was for them, the controlling concept that they feared at all times.
