The Origins of Slavery
Christian theologians objected to theft and mistreatment of slaves, but they believed in the naturalness of slavery as an institution. Some doubted whether Christians could exercise absolute authority over slaves, but most believed that slavery was valid as a punishment for crimes. Cotton Mather, the famous Puritan preacher, told Black Congregates that they were better off enslaved in this land and free in other lands. American-slat religious instruction would instill slaves with reason,. Christianity would prevent slave revolts as they had taken place in the Caribbean.
