It wasn't highly paid, but anyway, it didn't involve a great deal of work. The last pieces I ever did for the New Statesman were on the rise of Mandela. It was so exciting to have a ringside seat when Jeffrey Howe launched his attack on Thatcher. And at that stage, we knew it was all over for her.
