John Maynard Keynes thought what he really wanted to do was technocrats running monetary policy and also spending government money to promote investment. If you maintain full employment, then a whole bunch of the Hayek Polani problem goes away because in a market economy there are people who have no wealth. Combine this with progressive taxes with bounties and taxes to align market prices with what's of social welfare. And Keynes said you would have a good society that could hold itself together and be free without becoming communist or fascist.
