Myth of the Month 10: Who Was Shakespeare? -- pt. 2: "Comfort and Despair"
Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong
Sonnets to the Lady, Number 128
Sonnetnubr one 28 says, how oft when thou my music music playest upon that blessed wood whose motion sounds with thy sweet fingers. Do i envy those jacks that nimble leap to kiss the tender inward of thy hand, whilst my poor lips would stand to be so tickled by thee blushing? So this is the first poem explicitly addressed to the woman. It sees her as alluring, fascinating, and also having this talent of nimbleness in playing the instrument. And shakespeare is violently ambivolent. He feels lust for the woman, but at the same time feels a dirty and impure because of this lust.
