Sussoon's poetry is very effective as anti-war satire, says Jim O'Grapher Wilson. He evokes the mud, the dirt, the general sense of panic in his poems like Counterattack and The Old Huntsman. Virginia Woolf actually preferred Sussoon's more lyrical verse to that of war poets such as Yates or Woolf.
