Is There a Better Way to Learn a Language?

Every language exists somewhere on a spectrum between two different extremes. At one end, you've got a very simple language with powerful primitives and then you build everything as libraries on top of that. And at the other end, you have languages like Swift which is built for extension. But does putting all of this complexity in the language actually make it harder? I don't really see it as adding complexity because what is really doing is trading API complexity for language complexity.
