UCLA became a home to work that was both hostile to and suspicious of trans children. John Hopkins opens its gender identity clinic in 1966, which is a signal moment for this new field of transsexual medicine. At UCLA, no one is ever going to help you get access to surgery; it's just that conservative. And so what this means in practice is that this clinic is very willing to see people and kind of see them for a long time because they're not really offering anything in return.
