The Importance of Christianity in the Fall of Rome
Gibbon's work was published at a time when the English, French and Spanish-speaking worlds were battling with representative government. Some critics objected to Gibbon's treatment of Christianity and the role he attributed to it in the fall of the Roman Empire. In particular, some Christian theologians and church leaders felt that Gibbon’s work was overly critical of the church and its role in history.
