Lucy's parents moved from South Africa to New Zealand when she was eight years old. Her dad worked in the merchant navy on cargo ships and he went all around the world doing radio work. He left his well paid job as an electrician to get a poorly paid job fixing TVs for customers while her mum was a stay at home parent. Lucy began school right at a time when the political situation in South Africa was just awfulShe recalls that perhaps you had to be under the age of 35 or if you were over 35 which her parents were but they couldn't afford it.
