Colonizing a Solar System
The most probable strategy tends to converge toward deploying a large laser and power beaming array near your sun. An outer moon with plenty of ice and rock which is safely outside any radiation boats that planet and most of the planets own gravity well. What you need early on is energy and cheap sources of raw materials, and smaller moons and asteroids are optimal for the latter. Your best energy source might not be your cheapest or most technologically advanced.
