"I had such a complicated relationship with my mother, in some ways I so resented her," he says. "I really was protective of her and wanted her to have a good life." His father died when she was 12; his mother was an immigrant who couldn't go to college. He only learned at a meeting with Danny Drom, who is a city councilman here in New York.
