Mika and her mom, who she's been off and on with David, moved to Albuquerque. The school was a part of an excerpt of Albuquerque made up of entirely of Mexicans and Native Americans. I'd gotten so used to blending in with my large extended family. I thought I could blend in at school as seamlessly as I melded at home. A little blonde girl from LA. And then she uses David's last name Gonzalez as she's like instinctively when people ask my last name, I say it as protection. By this time I leaned into the blondie moment and was proud to be a different kind of Mexican, a unique one, a blonde one.
