Consensus shouldn't be the enemy of UX at all, but it does require a certain maturity so that the team can have these conversations about who the user is and what the real problem is. I would argue in many ways that when I got started in UX in the 1980s, it felt like open source does today. Then we had this shining star called Apple, which kind of led the way, and really said, oh, wait, we need to do this UX stuff.
