The clod steel study about stereotype threat that doctor colin mentioned was co authered by joshua aronson, published in 19 95. In the more than two decades since then, that study has been cited around five thousand times as other researchers have dug further into the effect across more than 300 studies. The leading theory for why this happens is that when you're reminded that there's a stereotyp about you, you focus on proving that stereotype wrong instead of just doing the best you can on the task at hand.
