Athena's Gift to Perseus
Medusa's cave is said to have been located right where europe and africa almost touch, at the western end of the mediterranean. Legend has it that snakes dropped out of her hair as she walked, leading africa to become home to nearly 500 species of snakes. So when perseus arrived at the cave, he made his presence known. Medusa emerged from the dark shadows. The snakes in her hair were hissing so loudly that he could barely make out her reply. She said, if you wish to face me, by all means, please do.
