The Politics of False Gospels

In the gospels, it seems to me that if you were writing a fake gospel in order to gain prestige, you wouldn't write yourself into the script as a knucklehead who keeps misunderstanding Jesus. You have a lot of politically incorrect things set about Jesus and the apostles that are very difficult to explain. So this is not a hog geography. This is not gaining prestige for Peter or for, you know, possibly for John but John never uses his own name,. He's very indirect about that.
