I Have ADHD Podcast

CHAPTER

The Relationship Between Sleep and ADHD

The hormone melatonin is released later in people with ADHD. It usually takes adults two hours to fall asleep after melatonin, but for adults with ADHD, it can be up to three hours after. This late onset of melatonin is driven by genes that regulate the biological clock and those genes have been linked to psychiatric disorders like ADHD and bipolar disorder. The way our bodies naturally work is that we just want to stay up at night. And this causes us to stay up much later than what is healthy.
