In June 1914 the Austro-Hungarian government reached out to Germany in order to renegotiate and extend the purpose of their alliance. It was not only a defensive pact but an agreement to try to prevent any further encirclement of Austria from the south. So it was in this atmosphere of rising tension that the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie made plans to travel to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia. They would make several public appearances and perform certain state functions also at the same time that this trip to Sarajevo would serve as a kind of couples vacation.
