Any echo system contains a huge range of species, from the large ones we see to invertebrates and even microscopic organisms in the soil nd elsewhere. And it is the interactions between these components of the eco system that keep it functioning as a system. We have very little understanding of the importance of particular individual species. But we know that some of them are absolutely essential to eco systems. They call these keystone species. Others might be less important to the actual functioning of of the forest as a whole. So when we see a tree, it's much more than just a single individual tree. It’s one component of this web of different species that all come together and interact together
