The African Grove in Greenwich Village

Mordecai Noah was a theater critic for The National Advocate in the 1820s. He wrote about an African-American who opened an ice cream parlor on Greenwich Village. In 1821, William Brown added one more amusement to the bill: he created the African theater and started putting on plays.
