Kathleen McLaughlin: I thought it was going to be a science book. It became very clear to me right away that this was a story of economic inequality and how embedded economic inequality is in our country. Do we really want to be a country where 19-year-old college students need to sell their body parts in order to buy groceries? That's kind of my hope now, is that people will think about why this practice is growing.
