Is Shakespeare's Romeo a Poet?

The stage adaptation that I watched played Romeo as a poet. He was like solo-acquising about love or whatever. So how sincere is Shakespeare in terms of wanting? I mean, are we supposed to be swept up into this romance? And if he didn't have characters like Fr. Lawrence in there, then yeah.
