The Importance of Understanding the Fundamentals of Machine Learning

For someone just started in machine learning, what type of advice do you have for them? I think it's very important to understand the fundamentals that are underlying everything we do today. We're all trying to solve some very basic problems around statistical modeling. And thinking at that very fundamental level about what is the abstractions at which we want to build models at is very important.
