After the SARS crisis, the Eco-Health Alliance began to focus on how viruses might pass from animals to humans and cause a pandemic. Peter Dashack's organization received $18 million from the US government in a program called Pradit. Sheez teamed up with her friend Ralph Barrick who fused together different pathogens by mixing their genes. The central question is are there other SARS-like strains that have prepandemic potential? And if so, will vaccines and drugs work? We're in dangerous times and gain function represents one of those approaches that is a crucial tool for public health preparedness and response.
