The History of Labour

The word that I recall coming across most often was travile in the 17th century. Both words gain quite early on in many but English they're used for particularly difficult activity. There's a kind of myth that kind of parallels those two meanings and then eventually you get this specialized meaning in both words to do with the physical strains and stresses of labour.
