Using a Predictive Model, You Experience a Structured World
i hope you've now had the experience of a bringing a stream of somewhat unruly sensory information under an apt predictive model. And seen then, or rather heard, how that can bring a structured world into view. As a philosopher, it sometimes interests me to wonder where this leaves the notion of veridical perception. Perception itself is a kind of controlled hallucination. You experience a structured world because you expect a certain kind of structured world. But if predictive processin and stories of this kind are on track, then these are all er these are all exercises of same kind of constructive computational story. And this is where human experience lives.
