In the 1920s, Berlin was consumed in a kind of artistic, hedonistic orgy. The headlamps glittered off the asphalt and neon flashed on cinema facades. That's what we think of when we think of Berlin but for what, seven eights of the city? There was little work there. Many were living in squalor. It was a hard, hard life. And that was before the crash of 1929.
